FESTIVALS

Mela

MELA is a summer festival up and down the country which celebrates Asian culture throughout the UK. Bollywood celebrities, dancers and musicians come from all over the world to entertain you so why not take a visit this year.

Mela 2006
With six stages of classical, urban, community and modern Asian music, plus a roaring Bengali tiger, Atif Aslam a Pakistan pop star and a grand specially commissioned ‘Bollywood Steps’ finale, the London Mela was one of the most eagerly anticipated events of the Summer. The Mela, which is supported by the Mayor of London and produced by Ealing Council in partnership with Hounslow Council, took place on Sunday 13th August in Gunnersbury Park, W3.

Mayor Ken Livingstone said “This years London Mela was one of the capital's major cultural events.  What made the London Mela was its unique mixture of classical and modern music plus theatre and dance performance. Londoners from all communities came together and enjoyed the Mela.”

Main stage performers included singer Pascal of Bollywood a French singer who crosses cultures with his passion for Bollywood songs and Atif Aslam, a Pakistan rock star who makes his UK debut.

For the first time in two decades the Mela brought together the legendary British Bhangra group Chirag Pechan with original band members Amarjit Sidhu and Mangal Singh. Also appearing on the main stage was singer Ajay, female rappers Hard Kaur & Ms Scandalous and Mentor Kolektiv.

The main stage is produced in partnership with BBC Asian Network and will be compeered by Sonia Deol and Murtz.
