The Louis Vuitton Don re-emerges on the scene just as the summer comes to a close with his third album offering, “Graduation”. Featuring additional vocals by Mos Def, T-Pain, Chris Martin, Lil Wayne and Dwele. The album has been criticized for Wests obsession with being modern and loosing his edge. However, this is perhaps due to critics being riled by West’s ego mania – any guy that describes himself as a demi-god is not just sticking his head on the line but his whole career!
However, in response to his critics Kanye West has fought back with “Graduation” and, despite his obsession in becoming a living legend, his talent as always, shines through. Unlike his previous albums, guest appearances on “Graduation” have been reduced. Kanye explained, “There’s just serious songs, hooks, chords and ideas. No special effects or antics…This album is like what made Muhammed Ali great. Sure he’s remembered for being a great fighter, but he is also remembered for getting up off the matt whenever he was knocked down!”
And up and about he certainly is as “Graduation” is strong from start to finish. The album opens up with the track ‘Good Morning’ -a combination of old skool beats set with an electro-infused orchestra which sets the tone for the album. However, it is tracks such as ‘Stronger’, ‘Flashing Light’ and the bravado of ‘Big Brother’ that establish Kayne West still as one of the most exciting Hip-Hop artists around. This time he graduates with honours!
