I want to give back to a country I love, and which has given my family and me huge opportunities.’
Priti Patel is expected to become Britain’s first Asian woman MP following her selection in the new constituency of Witham. Local activists selected her to represent them as the Conservative candidate at the next general election at a meeting last Monday night, November 20. At the final meeting Priti beat three male candidates in the race to be the prospective MP. Her selection is a success for the party’s Priority List and evidence that the Conservative Party is changing.
Priti, who worked for William Hague when he was the Party leader, is a rising star in the Party, which she joined as a teenager. Her parents were East African Asians who fled to Britain to escape the Ugandan dictator Idi Amin before she was born. Following her selection, Priti said: “I am a British Asian, a British citizen, part of a community that has benefited enormously from the country. I want to give back to a country I love, and which has given my family and me huge opportunities.”
Commenting on the fact she is expected to be Britain’s first Asian woman MP, Priti said: “That would be tremendous, a huge honour, a huge privilege. I would look forward to it. I was thrilled to be selected. A huge range of emotions went through me.”
Conservative Party Chairman, Francis Maude, said: “I am absolutely thrilled with Priti’s selection. Priti is bright, articulate, hugely energetic and has a big political future. This is yet more evidence the Conservative Party is changing.”
