Freema Agyeman, is making history as the first black female actress to plays Doctor Who's new assistant. Xcel investigates the journey of this young actress and discovers why her future is in the stars. With only a few parts under her belt Freema Agyeman couldn´t believe her luck when she was offered the part of the Doctor's new assistant to replace the popular Billie Piper. Freema, who will play Martha Jones, said: "It's amazing, I'm having the time of my life."
"I could just sit and gush about what a good time I'm having. It's literally like I'm living a dream". But will Martha become as close to the Doctor as Billie Piper's character Rose Tyler? "It's all really early days. If I'm honest I don't exactly know where their relationship is going to go - let's just all find out together," Freema explained. Doctor Who fans will recognise Freema from her part in the final two episodes of series two. "When I did the one episode that was so much more than anything I could imagine, because it was, it is, the most amazing job to work on. "
"To get this is just beyond my dreams". So how did her journey begin? Freema attended Middlesex University and came away with a BA Honours in Performning Arts and Drama. After this she spent the summer of 1996 in a theatre summer school. Also, Freema also studied at Radford University in Virginia, in the USA. Since then she has acquired a huge list of theatre spots, film and dance credits to her name including a regular role in Crossroads the revival.
