This is an amazing thing for me - I used to look up to sports stars such as Imran Khan and now it’s going to be me on the billboard. I’m giving Asian kids out there a path to follow...”
Reebok is signing an endorsement partnership with British boxing sensation Amir Khan. He becomes the first ever boxer to be signed up by Reebok UK and joins existing sport and music icons such as Manchester United’s Ryan Giggs and Streets frontman Mike Skinner.
Fresh from his sixth successful professional victory, Khan’s first appearance for Reebok is in the brand’s next ‘I Am What I Am’ campaign across the UK. Reebok’s first venture into boxing has seen the sportswear firm working alongside Khan to design and produce signature RbK gloves, kit and boots for all of his fights – starting with his next professional bout in Glasgow on the 25th March.
Amir Khan says: “This is an amazing thing for me - I used to look up to sports stars such as Imran Khan and now it’s going to be me on the billboard. I’m giving Asian kids out there a path to follow. This has given me a real boost in my quest to be World Champion and I look forward to promoting boxing with Reebok in the UK and beyond.”
The 19-year-old from Bolton was an outstanding amateur and burst into the limelight when he won a silver medal in the lightweight boxing category at the 2004 Athens Olympics. After beating Cuban Mario Kindelan at the Reebok Stadium – home of Amir’s beloved Bolton Wanderers - to avenge his Olympic defeat, Khan turned professional.
Despite his incredible rise to fame, Khan doesn’t let fame and potential fortune go to his head and is always likely to stay true to his roots. He says: “From winning Silver in Athens to signing a deal with Reebok, everything in the last two years has been amazing…but I’m still the same person. My family and my mates help to keep my feet firmly on the ground!”
Michael Price, Reebok UK marketing director: “This is a really exciting partnership for Reebok and Amir Khan. It’s great to be able to sign someone from Reebok’s hometown. His performances in the Olympic games and since turning professional have been dazzling. Yet he leaves his boxing persona in the ring - out of it he’s a consummate professional and a real role model for modern British youth. This makes him the perfect fit for Reebok.”
Andy Towne, Reebok’s European marketing vice president said: “The ‘I Am What I Am’ campaign is intended to inspire young people to find their own voice by celebrating contemporary icons. Amir’s passion, success, unique talent along with his position as a ‘real’ modern role model makes him an ideal ambassador for us.”
