Mechanical engineering affects your everyday life more than you think. From transport through to work equipment. It is an exciting and challenging career that can take you across the globe.
A Degree in Mechanical Engineering
Mechanical Engineering degrees are available now at most universities with a wide variation in the types of courses and specialisms offered within these degrees, so it is a good idea to check the prospectuses carefully before applying. It is possible to do joint honours with a range of other subjects both sciences and arts including business and language courses.
It is important that you ensure that your degree is an accredited course recognised by the Institute of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). You can study for a three year BEng qualification or a four year MEng qualification.
It is important to understand that if you want to rise to the top of your field as a mechanical engineer then you will have to become chartered. In order to be chartered you will need to have done four years of study. Therefore many students opt for the MEng qualification. However, should you wish to study a BEng then it is possible to add a further year of specialised study known as a Matching Section.
Sandwich years are also an important factor in mechanical engineering degrees. Therefore, check to see if you course does offer work experience. Again, if you wish to become chartered you will have to have gained sufficient work experience even after you’ve graduates. This is called the Initial Professional Development (IPD). This usually lasts for at least four years, after which you can apply to become chartered.
