Foundation Degree

Studying a Foundation Degree provides young people with the opportunity to bridge the gap between school or college and work. Leaving school and entering the world of work can be daunting, but it is also an exciting time for school leavers to begin new experiences.

Foundation Degrees are higher education qualifications that combine academic study with work-based learning. Courses are designed and delivered in partnership with employers - embarking on a Foundation Degree means starting a course that has been designed with real jobs in mind. Foundation Degree students gain tailored, intermediate level skills for which employers are calling out.

There are over 2000 Foundation Degrees course options listed on the UCAS Foundation Degree database, offering a wealth of subject choices on offer across the country that could lead to a dream career. Those interested in careers from health and social care to railway engineering, business to sport and exercise science, police studies to professional photography, financial services to forensic science and beyond, should take time to consider the courses available.

On graduation, students obtain the title FdA or FdSc after their name and can take the opportunity to convert their Foundation Degree to an Honours Degree with an extra year of study. You can study a Foundation Degree on a full or part-time basis and many courses are available as distance learning courses delivered by e-learning systems.

Many employers in both the public and private sector have already offered support of Foundation Degrees, designing courses, sending employees on courses and hiring FD graduates. Employers involved include KLM, Network Rail, Specsavers, Radisson Edwardian Hotels, Rolls-Royce, the Metropolitan Police, the National Health Service, Marsh and Norwich Union – to name just a few.
