When you here someone describe their job as working for the “public sector” you would be forgiven for thinking they were just a stuffy bureaucrat who spends their day paper pushing paper guiding their forms from the in tray to the out tray whilst drowning in a sea of paper clips. However, the public sector is by far the most popular work sector with graduates and covers not just the diplomats and tax inspectors but the National Health Service, education and the Armed Forces.

Why should I work in the public sector?
At present, over six over million people work for the public sector so they can’t have all got it wrong! Indeed there are many advantages to working for this sector such as pension schemes, on going professional development, a stable salary and above all, working in the public sector means that you will have the chance to give something back.

In addition to this many public sector positions are flexible in their employment and also provide job share schemes and generous leave which is always a great stability factor when choosing a career. You will also get the opportunity to help in providing world class services to the public and be part of a continual sense of development in aiming to achieve this. Add this to a fast track approach to management and you can now understand why this remains one of the UK’s highest career sectors and can provide a fast paced dynamic career for even the most liveliest of graduates.

What qualities do I need for a career in the public sector?
Most, if not all workers, should be IT proficient when it comes to working in the public sector. You should also basic numeracy skills. In addition to this  you will also need to be a good communicator and be able to work as part of a team. Your team work skills and ability to get the job done are essential to working in whatever field you choose within this sector.
Above all however you must be of sound judgment and be able to take on big responsibility’s and handle pressure and you must be completely reliable. This quality, when working with and for the public is key in order to succeed within this industry.
