A career in music holds a lot of opportunities. However, since the rise of pop programmes such as the X-Factor most people now want and think they have the talent for a career in the music industry.
Firstly, you need to ask yourself one question – do I love music or singing or do just want to famous. If it is the latter X-CEL suggests you save you energy for you fifteen minutes of fame and let the real musicians take over.
When most people think of musicians however and a career in the music industry they often think of people who sing or play an instrument. However, a career in the music industry is much more diverse.
A Career in Music
A Career in Music can depend entirely on an individual’s field of specialization. Musicians may be playing a musical instrument, singing, writing music or composing or conducting.
How can I train as a musician?
Most musicians will have found their passion for music quite early on. This will usually lend them to studying music at GCSE or taking private lessons either in singing or for a particular instrument. For those who are extremely serious about a career in music they usually go onto college to train in music as well as obtain a degree. Should you wish to follow that route but have limited funds then contact the Incorporated Society of Musicians who may be able to offer you advise on music scholarships
For those who do not follow the formal training route and form a band, life can be tough and only the unique and the determined survive! However, if you have followed that role make sure you attend as many gigs as possible, start small and get a strong following in you local area then expand from there- hopefully the rest will follow and that elusive record label is only a performance away.
Producing Music
With the rise of the DJ and home grown record labels many people are now considering a career in producing music. Again this can be a costly business in creating your own studio and competition is fierce.
