A career as an artist encompasses many things. Whether you would regard yourself as a fine artist, a sculptor or photographer, it is important to remember that if this becomes a career you will effectively be running your own business – YOU! In the early stages therefore as an artists not only will you have to create the work and sell it, you will also have to do your own accounts and market and network for yourself.
To create a full-time living as an artist can be a hard slog and only the very few and determined manage to do this. Many artists usually fund their income with additional sources, often teaching or running workshops etc. For many artists however, this additional source of income acts as their main earnings and they tend to pursue the art work outside of working hours.
Training For A Career In Art
Whilst no formal training is required many artists started at an early age. Those who are serious tend to study a foundation programme in art and design, to really develop their skills and their own individual style as an artist, before they go onto degree level.
Entry to the vast majority of art and design courses is through UCAS www.ucas.com - or for more detailed information the National Society for Education in Art and Design (NSEAD) publish the book “Creative Futures”, which is available through the NSEAD. www.nsead.or
