The University of Glasgow, founded in 1451 and just
named Scottish University of the Year by the Sunday
Times, has a long-established reputation as a research led
institution. But ….“there’s a lot more to the University
than its excellent academic reputation. Student life here is
fantastic”. And it's one of the few places in the UK where
you can study Geomatics!
UK industry and the international market both have a growing
need for geomaticians. The International Federation of Surveyors
(F.I.G.) defines Geomatics as integrating the disciplines of:
Geodesy; Surveying; Mapping; Positioning; Navigation;
Cartography; Remote Sensing; Photogrammetry; Geographic
Information Systems; and Global Positioning Systems.
An individual geomatician’s professional or research career may
focus on the gathering of geospatial information, its processing or
its dissemination – so appeals to many – those with an interest
in the outdoors, having a fascination with maps, using the latest
measurement technologies, IT, Graphic Design or helping in
development, to name a few.
We currently offer RICS accredited taught
MSc programmes in:
Geospatial & Mapping Sciences
(contact Jane.Drummond@ges.gla.ac.uk); and Geoinformation
Technology & Cartography
(contact David.Forrest@ges.gla.ac.uk)
Incorporating modules in:
Land Surveying;
Aerial Surveying
(photogrammetry); Satellite Remote Sensing; Engineering
Surveying; Hydrographic Surveying; Cadastral Surveying;
Cartography; Geographic Information Systems and Land
Information Systems (GIS & LIS); National Spatial Data
Infrastructures (NSDI); Geodesy & GPS; Terrain Modelling;
coordinate systems; and, map projections, with supporting Maths
and IT.
PGDip, PGCert and CPD programmes are also offered. The taught programmes have attracted considerable support
from the Geomatics sector. UK/EU students have access to
competitive awards (£3200 in 2007). Maintenance support is
available to students domiciled in Scotland.
We also offer research degrees (PhD, MSc).
