Postgraduate Courses in Product Design


The Creative and Cultural Industries are recognised as being amongst the fastest growing sectors in the UK economy. Postgraduate courses in Product Design and the associated business development are of particular relevance. Product Design covers a wide and varied range of activities which integrate form, function and lifestyle. A postgraduate course in Product Design will equip you with a range of flexible skills and design experience that will enable you to blend creative talent with business acumen. A postgraduate course in Product Design will require students to come prepared with a self generated idea that they are motivated to pursue or an area of interest that has the potential for a product to be part of the solution. This idea or area will form the basis for study throughout the programme.

The aim of a postgraduate course in Product Design is to offer a diverse group of candidates with a successful background in design/business a range of projects, skills and experiences which would enable them to either:

  • start up their own design/manufacturing business
  • or champion innovative design within an existing company



At Glasgow Caledonian University, the underlying thread permeating throughout the modules is that of developing and idea into a commercial reality. This will include identifying the problem, researching and quantifying the opportunity, developing concepts, analysing and selecting concept solutions, design and development of these solutions and detailing. Supporting this activity requires knowledge of management processes and techniques, marketing branding and communication. Importantly for the commercial success and globalisation, ethical considerations and thinking are critical factors.

Modules on the programme will cover the following areas:

Web presence, Branding and Marketing

Project Planning and Management

Ethical and legal considerations

Business processes

Implementation and commercialisation


The dissertation element of the MSc award is both a written and practical submission based on the skills and knowledge gained from the postgraduate certificate and diploma elements of the award. It can encompass a mixture of design, technical research and prototyping skills as well as analysis of current and future design and culture trends. This creates a vehicle for students with a diversity of backgrounds to progress their research interests and goals related to their work.

Postgraduate courses in Product Design are usually assessed by a combination of examination and coursework. The final mark may be determined by weighted average of the two elements. The MSc Project may also be assessed by Dissertation and oral presentation.

Entry to an MSc programme is based on an Honours Degree or equivalent in an appropriate discipline. Applicants who hold qualifications gained from recognised overseas institutions are also eligible for entry. Interviews may also be requested.
